| Ohlone Center Offers Herbal Studies In Berkeley
The Ohlone Center of Herbal Studies is an earth-centered, community-based, herbal medicine school. The mission of the Ohlone Center is to keep Western herbal knowledge alive by bringing healing knowledge of plants to people, empowering the ability of self healing through the use of herbs. A variety of classes are offered from herb walks and short workshops to the formal Clinical Herbalist training program. All classes are small, interactive, flexible, and tailored to student's needs. The school is primarily committed to educating healers in successful careers as Herbalists and/or Herbal Educators. Ohlone Center offers its Clinical Herbalist training program in three ten-month tracks: Apprenticeship, Therapeutics, and Clinical Internship. The total program takes from 30 to 36 months to complete and consist of over 1000 hours of direct instructor contact. The Apprenticeship track is the first ten months of the program. It's designed to give a comprehensive understanding of a healthy body, which plants are suitable for assisting in maintaining a healthy body and how to prepare plants to be effective. This track explores chemistry and medicine making, plant identification, mystical and sacred plant use and more. There are a number of herb walks and over night camping trips to the mountains and ocean for identifying plants in their natural habitat. Students finishing this track will have a well-grounded foundation in all aspects of Western Herbalism. Many students find this track to be whole and complete. By itself, it is suitable for the family caretaker or someone interested in making one's own herbal medicines. The Therapeutic track is the second ten months of the program. Disease and disease processes are explored in a deeper physiological and emotional way. We study the theory of body systems and constitutional therapy and then apply theory to real life situations. This class involves extensive research and solving herbal practice problems. Augmenting this track are planned day walks and camping trips to identify native plants. This track prepares students to think quickly and with confidence in formulating herbal remedies. Clinical Internship track is the third and final ten months of the full Clinical Herbalist training program. In this track students learn how to formulate business plans, learn to conduct client interviews, make and mix herbal remedies, how to research cases, devise treatment plans, and manage caseloads. Interns are supervised by a senior staff person. In addition to business practices, accounting and money management will be discussed. Students, who complete this three track program, leave with a clear understanding how to set up, promote and run a successful herbal practice.
