5 holistic steps to a fuller life in the event of illness, aging or end of life:

-Touch: Gentle massage by a professional can be a priceless addition to the care taking of your loved one. As a massage therapist, I have found that working with individuals who really need massage is rewarding and meaningful. Family caregivers of the ill or elderly individual want for their loved on to be at peace and at-pleasure. A gentle massage by the therapist in the can be a necessary break for caretakers; caretakers can relax and have alone time while their love one gets tender loving care at the hands of a gentle skilled massage therapist. Massage techniques appropriate for the frail or elderly person should be extremely gentle; I am a believer in the importance of family caretakers learning how to massage their loved ones with the guidance of a skilled massage therapist. The concept of "massage" might be daunting for a person of an older generation. In this case offer touch in the form of a back-rub, a "lotioning" of hands or feet, or simply stroking their hair.

-Keep moving daily: ** The symptoms of aging and illness can be greatly alleviated by even the gentlest movement. If it is possible to move outdoors, an assisted walk to the end of the block and back. Gentle massage is a wonderful alternative to movement, increasing circulation when mobility is not possible.

-Music! Music is the universal language of the heart for every culture and generation. Listening to one's favorite music from a favorite era can sooth mind and emotions. These days it is easy to find any artist or song. This is such an easy way to lift your loved ones spirits!

-Reading: We all enjoyed story time as youngsters. Adults of all ages may find that being read to is still a joy and a wonderful way to stay connected to family. In the face of illness, conversation often centers on disease and suffering; Take a break with some entertaining reading. Be open to reading whatever your loved one requests. Even if you are worried about troubling your loved one with current news of the times, this may be a healthy way for your loved one keep a sense of independence remaining knowledgeable of local and world events.

-Nourishing Food: ** Sugar, high sodium and heavy meats create harder work for the body. During a time of illness it is important for the body's resources to be available for healing and nourishing the body. Fresh steamed or lightly cooked veggies, lots of water and whole grains are best. Sprinkle ground flax seed over meals for added fiber – regular bowel movement helps eliminate toxins from the body. Hospital food is not always the most nutritious food, but you may be able to work with the hospitals nutritionist to find holistic solutions to diet.

**Work with and consult a doctor before changing diet/exercise and is also recommended before administering massage.
