Nearly 100 current students and alumni of the Na-tional Holistic Institute offered free 8- minute post event sports massage sequences to marathon runners in San Francisco on Sunday, July 28. A large white tent lined with massage tables near the race's finish line across from the Ferry Building was staffed with NHI therapists from 8:00 am 1 pm. Weary runners from the 2007 marathon had the opportunity to receive a massage free of charge from students and graduates of one of the country's leading college of massage therapy. This is the first year NHI participated in the San Francisco marathon.
"We are pleased to be involved this year, especially on the eve of our new San Francisco campus opening, " said NHI Director of Development Tim Veitzer. Veitzer continues, "It is a great opportunity to give back to the Bay Area sporting community that we've been a part of for many years." And runners were delighted as well. Marathon veteran Norm Ploss declared, "Massage is not a totally new post event activity, but in my sixteen marathons, this is the best massage I've encountered." When asked what a free sports massage means after twenty-six miles of pounding pavement, runner Noah Goldstein responded, "It means that I can walk home." NHI student Miyah Buchanan commented, "The energy, camaraderie and incredible athletes made it truly special and a lot of fun!"
Additional NHI massage appointments at the "Teaching Clinic" will become available to the public in late September (similar to those at the existing Bay Area campuses in Emeryville, San Jose and Petaluma) when the Market at Gough campus is up and running. Potential students can find course schedule information and interested clients can book massage appointments .
National Holistic Institute also intends to participate in a similar way with the upcoming Team in Training/Nike Women's Marathon on Sunday October 21st as well. Team in Training has long been known as the leader in endurance sporting events helping to find cures for Leukemia and Lymphoma. "This is another great way for our students to participate in world class sporting events while at the same time give back to our community and help those afflicted with cancer," said Tim Veitzer NHI's Director of Development.
