Green Jewelry Class at Revere

The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts is a professional jewelry school that offers diplomas and certificates as authorized by the State of California.

"Tribal Elegance: Silver Web" recycled rubber, recycled sterling silver, coated copper wire by Revere Academy instructor Christine Dhein.

Revere Academy recently offered a new one-day class, titled "Green Jewlery," designed to give participants the information they need to green their jewelry business and meet the changing needs of their customers, as they demand more ethically sourced materials. The sold-out class was a huge success.

Gary Rowe, President of the G.W. Rowe Corporation traveled from Fort Smith, Arkansas to attend the class. "I am sure that there are many in our industry who share my interest in making certain that our processes and procedures are not only ethical but are also undertaken with every possible consideration to the persons and environments affected by them. I had actively sought scientific, industry specific sources for this information in the past without much success. The Green Jewelry course that I attended at Revere provided me with valuable information andºnumerous resources in a succinct, one-day format."

"Green" issues in the jewelry industry are complex, and instructors Jennifer Horning, an environmental lawyer and and activist promoting ethically sourced materials, and Christine Dhein, Revere Faculty and founder of the eNewsleter, "Green Jewelry News" did not claim to have all of the answers. Instead, they each offered a wealth of information and unique perspectives that, according to one participant, "brought insight and energy to to the topic."

In just six hours, participants learn where metals and gemsotones come from, about green suppliers and what they can do to promote healthy mining practices. This class offers jewelers the information they need to respond to customers' questions about the sourcing and sustainability of materials. The class also covers gold testing, ingot making, safe and eco-friendly studio practices, future green business certification, and more. Instructor, Jennifer Horning, is also one of the original Co-Founders of Ethical Metalsmiths, a non-profit organization committed to increasing awareness and demand for responsibly sourced materials as an investment in the future. The group stands for social responsibility, a healthy living environment and materials that are consistent with these values.

Revere hopes to offer the class again soon. Meanwhile check out Revere Academy's schedule for a wide variety of classes in jewelrymaking and design.
