Thomas Frank has explained why working America votes for politicians who invariably favor the rich. In The Wrecking Crew he reveals the unbelievably blundering and conspicuously corrupt Washington these politicians have given us. Rather than cutting down the big government they claim to hate, the ruling coalition has simply sold it off— deregulating many industries, defunding others, turning public policy into private-sector bidding, making Washington into a surreal landscape of lavish suburbs and gleaming lobbyist headquarters. Criminal entrepreneurship and pathetic incompetence have replaced anything like honest governmental concerns.

The author of the runaway bestseller What's the Matter With Kansas, Thomas Frank is the founding editor of The Baffler and a contributing editor at Harper's. He has received a Lannan Foundation award and been a guest columnist for The New York Times.
